It's That Time Again...

To: B. Nagel

Dear Betty,

You win.  (Okay, Pete helped.)  Rather nasty trick, there, invoking the Boss's name.  You know I am powerless against the Co-Dictators of the Universe.

My entry to the current Clarity of Night contest is here.  Or you can read it in the postscript.  I keep hoping for one of those magical epiphanies that write themselves, 250 words of such depth and perfection that it reduces Parrish to tears.  Sadly, no such epiphany occurred for this contest.  I will jump cartwheels if only I can stay in the Forties Club (do not even dare to suggest that has anything to do with my age).

I've read but not commented on all the entries.  Some, like this one, are way too profound for my summertime brain.  Some (like Tessa's, and Sarah's are poetry: I stink at appreciating poetry.

Quite a few of my peeps entered: Merry, Ello, Chris, Aniket, wolfie, Paul, Pete, Parrish, J.C., Precie, Angelique, Dottie, Sandra, Absolute Vanilla, Surly Writer, Whirlochre. Am I well-connected or what? (Yes, I hobnob.)

My current favorites are da Boss's and Sylvia's and Tre'von's.  I think.  At least right now.

Not only is my Clarity entry not to the level I'd hoped, my word counts on the WIPs are lagging.  McKoala's going to claw me soon, I'm afraid.  I know your own poetry and Rumpelstiltskin writing is going well, even if I haven't left comments.  I'm all-knowing that way.

I hope that your home ownership and kitchen remodelling are going well.  You will certainly need to get ahead of things in order to fill the Boss's shoes when he's on leave.  First thing you can do is raise my salary.  Royalty needs bling, you know.

Do give my best to Mrs. Betty and to Zora.

Cordially,
the Queen

PS - I haven't mailed your books yet, but I also haven't forgotten.

PPS - Here's my entry:

Presage
by Aerin Rose

Twenty-two hours from San Francisco to Kathmandu. Four hours until the layover in Hong Kong. Caelin will have finished grading papers by then. She arches her back, stretching, then wiggles her toes, and catches the eye of the flight attendant.

“More, please.” She indicates the travel-sized wineglass. The remaining ruby droplets glisten in the spotlight of her reading lamp. The attendant nods from the galley.

“You realize that’s basically grape juice?” Chloe peers around the headrest as her business class bed reverts to its upright position.

“It’s a second growth Bordeaux and you know it, O Queen Food Critic,” Caelin retorts. “How’d you sleep?”

“Not well. Looks like fourteen bottles of questionable Bordeaux didn’t help you sleep, either.”

“Excited?”

“And nervous. What if she hates us?”

“Sweetheart.” Caelin strokes her wife’s cheek as Chloe unfolds the passport she’s been clutching. A little girl with dark eyes and copper skin gazes at them, unsmiling and unafraid. “She liked us well enough before. Any kid will hate her parents at some point. Let’s just focus on getting her home.”

The flight attendant materializes with the bottle of Château Cos-d'Estournel 1989, which streams like scarlet silk into the stemware.

“Like the orphanage is going to let her come home when you show up drunk,” Chloe teases, leaning close. Caelin smiles into her spouse’s black curls. Points of light play on the surface of her wine, casting images against the back of the seat in a rosy haze.

Clarity of Night results

Blog buddy and Writer's Challenge participant Pete Dudley's entry "Sliding" won First Place!  Congratulations on a well-deserved win, PJD!

I actually received an honorable mention in the Clarity of Night Ascension contest.  This was a really difficult prompt for me, so I was proud of myself that I entered at all.  Many thanks to Tris for feedback, and to Nicholas for all kinds of help and basketball info.

Jason's introduced a helpful feature to the results.  He uses a point-based system for rating entries, with the highest possible score a 45.  Now, he's identifying the entries that rank 40 or above.  Since I've always used this as a writing exercise, I hugely appreciate this sort of feedback.

Okay.

Now let's do the subjective part.

What did you think of the entries?  Which were your favorites?  Let's discuss...which reminds me...

Monday's Must-Read

MUST READ OF THE DAY:

Stephen Parrish has an amazing post about the gloom and doom of the publishing industry.

And by amazing I mean that it not only exudes Stephen's characteristic sardonic wisdom, it has an anecdote about diamonds.

AND, Elsewhere 'Round the Blogosphere:

Very Important Post: Lee Wind, one of my NFP (new favorite people), talks about Prop 8.  (If you haven't watched Jack Black as Jesus, you are missing out.)

Jason Evans at Clarity of Night put up a post entitled Leeward, but it's not about Lee (above).

Church Lady asks you to guess why the naked man has a long beard. Sort of.

at superstickies.com.  (Thanks to Lyn Viehl at PBW for the link.)

If you haven't discovered Margaret and Helen yet, you're missing a treat.  And whether you agree with their points of view or not (they're - shall we say - anti-Palin), these two grandmothers get 500+ comments per post.  (I am deliriously happy when I get 5 comments per post.)

Celebrating the Moonrat!!!

Our very own Moonrat celebrates her second bloggaversary today. In honor of Moonie, her Mischief Minions have planned a huge celebration over at the Party Site. Go over, do some karaoke, submit a haiku or two, and win fun prizes while letting Moonrat know how much we love her.

In the meantime, I thought I'd give you some information about this elusive species.  It's hard to find reliable information on the web these days.  I did my own fact-checking and corrected the article - my notes are in red.  Sheesh.

From Gymnures and Hedgehogs: Erinaceidae - Malayan Moonrat (echinosorex Gymnura): Species Accounts

Moonrat - ECHINOSOREX GYMNURUS

Possibly Endangered One of a Kind

Class: Animals with Milk Coffee Glands (Mammalia)
Subclass: True Mammals (Eutheria)
Order: Insect Eaters (Insectivora)
Family: AErinaceidea.

Location: Southeast Asia. New York City

Habitat: Moist forests, mangrove swamps, and wet farmlands are the typical habitats of Malayan moonrats. Scientists believe the animals spend at least part of their time in the water.Publishing offices, and anywhere they can access their booklists at Amazon.com.

Diet: An animal of the night, Malayan moonrats eat worms, insects, crabs, and other invertebrates found in moist areas. They will also eat fruit, and occasionally frogs or fish. (This all seemed quite accurate.)

Behavior and reproduction: When they are not looking for food at night, Malayan moonrats rest in hiding places among tree roots, inside hollow logs, or in other tight spaces. Adults live alone. with slush piles and indie music.   They release strong odors to mark the edges of their territories and warn other moonrats crazy people (see below) to stay away with threatening hisses. deprecating blog posts.   They also release odors to ward off predators  crazy people (see below.)

When they are preparing to have young, they will make nests mostly from leaves. the pages of rejected manuscripts.  Females usually have two babies at a time, either once or twice a year.  Babies may resemble the mother moonrat or may resemble square volumes of printed words, called "books."

Scientists know little more about moonrat adults or young. (Scientists are such idiots.  They only need to fund a study and then spend time observing Momrat and Dadrat in their natural habitats.  Why am I the only person to have thought of this?)

Malayan moonrats and people: Generally speaking, Malayan moonrats leave people alone, and people leave them alone people, particularly crazy ones, flock to their offices demanding information about a submitted manuscript that consisted of the word "sasquatch" written over and over again in a green crayon.    One can understand why moonrats prefer their anonymity.

Conservation status: Malayan moonrats are not threatened except by the onslaught of millions of adoring fans.

Now head over and spread some Moonie Love of your own!!!
